About these sets

How Sweet & Supernatural. Four weeks apart in 2024, NewJeans released the How Sweet single album and then Supernatural, their Japanese debut. How Sweet is the group at its sharpest — calling out nonsense, refusing to ask again, seeing straight through an obvious ploy — while Bubble Gum turns soft and floating, all clouds, balloons and bubbles. Supernatural and Right Now are trilingual, so their Korean arrives in short bursts between Japanese and English lines. What survives is the good stuff: 인연, the sense of a fated connection, alongside heart rate, honesty, and not wanting to be late.

OST Singles. In late 2023 NewJeans recorded two drama soundtracks back to back, and both are almost entirely in Korean — a rarity in a catalogue built on code-switching, which makes them the richest Korean in the group's work. 아름다운 구속, for A Time Called You, is a cover of Kim Jong-seo's 1996 hit, and its register is markedly older and more literary: prayer, dread, being changed by love, the beautiful constraint of the title. 우리의 밤은 당신의 낮보다 아름답다, for My Demon, answers it with steadier language — protecting someone's night, the fear held in their eyes, a promise about every morning to come.

Get Up. The 2023 EP Get Up is the group's most sparing writing — short English hooks with Korean surfacing in quick bursts, so this set is smaller by design. Super Shy hands over the language of nerves: trembling, standing side by side, eyes suddenly shining. ETA supplies the rest, and it is the most conversational Korean in the catalogue — a friend telling you to stop wasting your time, that he's been caught looking elsewhere, that she'll help you end it. Cool With You and ASAP round it out with expressing yourself, crossing a distance, and hanging up a call too soon.
